Former Negro League player Howard Leroy “Toots” Ferrell died on Oct. 11, 2002 at the age of 73.

He began to pitch in 1946 as the age of 16. In 1947, he recorded 5 wins and 3 losses for the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League. The next season, 1948, he was traded to the Baltimore Elite Giants and finished with a 9-2 record.

In 1949, he went 10-2 for Baltimore’s division title winning team.  He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.

Ferrell is a member of the Delaware Afro-American Hall of Fame (inducted in 1999) and the Delaware Hall of Fame (inducted in 2000).
